About the test

Albion: The Iron Age Celts — Britain Before Rome (c. 873–233 BC)

Step into Iron Age Britain, centuries before Roman conquest, when Celtic-speaking communities shaped the landscapes, cultures, and identities of Albion. This test explores the genetic legacy of Iron Age Celtic populations in Britain between approximately 873 and 233 BC—a period marked by hillfort societies, regional tribal identities, intensified agriculture, and far-reaching connections across the Channel into continental Europe.

During this era, Britain was not isolated. Communities across southern England, the Midlands, northern England, and Wales participated in dynamic exchange networks linking Atlantic Europe, Gaul, and the broader La Tène cultural sphere. Hillforts such as Danebury and Dinorben served as political and ceremonial centers, while lowland settlements and burial grounds reflect everyday life, social stratification, and regional continuity. The individuals represented here capture the biological structure of pre-Roman Britain, preserving Celtic ancestry rooted in earlier Bronze Age populations yet shaped by Iron Age mobility and interaction.

Collected and reconstructed from:
  • Oxfordshire — Yarnton; Thame; Stanton Harcourt (Gravelly Guy): Lowland settlement and burial contexts representing central southern Britain, reflecting long-term population continuity and agricultural lifeways within Iron Age Celtic societies.
  • Somerset — Ham Hill: One of Britain’s largest hillfort complexes, associated with major Iron Age population centers, trade, and craft production in southwest Britain.
  • Kent — Cliffs End Farm; East Kent Access Road: A key gateway between Britain and the Continent, preserving evidence of cross-Channel contact, migration, and ritual activity within Iron Age communities.
  • Hampshire — Nether Wallop (Danebury): A classic Iron Age hillfort site representing complex social organization, storage economies, and regional power in southern Britain.
  • Derbyshire — Brassington (Carsington Pasture Cave): A northern upland context reflecting Iron Age life beyond the southern lowlands, capturing regional diversity within Celtic Britain.
  • North Yorkshire — Knapton Wold: A burial landscape associated with Iron Age communities of northern England, illustrating geographic breadth across Albion.
  • Wales — Clwyd (Dinorben): A major Welsh hillfort complex representing western British Celtic societies and their strongholds prior to Roman expansion.

Together, these sites span much of Britain and Wales, illustrating the geographic diversity of Iron Age Celtic populations. They capture a mosaic of communities united by shared cultural traditions yet deeply regional in ancestry, subsistence, and social structure.

This test reveals:
  • The genetic structure of Iron Age Celtic populations in Britain
  • Regional variation across England and Wales before Roman contact
  • Continuity from Bronze Age ancestry into Iron Age societies

Perfect for:
  • People with British or Irish Isles ancestry interested in deep Celtic roots
  • Enthusiasts of Iron Age archaeology and pre-Roman Britain
  • Anyone curious about Britain’s population before the Roman world

Your personalized report includes:

Why take this test

Up until 2010, reading the DNA of ancient people was a dream. Since then, the DNA of a Neanderthal who lived over 30,000 years ago has been sequenced. After that reading, the DNA of ancient people who lived from 15,000 BC to 1,800 AD all over the world became the main object of paleogenomic research. This leap forward in technology allowed the creation of a new type of DNA test — tests that do not use modern-day populations as stand-ins for the ancient tribes but rather go right to the source and study these ancient peoples themselves.

The Ancient DNA Hub DNA test is the first next-generation DNA test. It is designed solely using the DNA of ancient people throughout history using our novel technologies.

With this test, you will receive a precise ancient ethnicity estimate with far greater geographical details than you could imagine. You will make new connections with historical people and places where your ancestors lived, walked, battled, created, and dreamed thousands of years ago. Using genetic data and evidence from history and archeology, we can revive the past and allow you to take part in this story at the most personal level.
