About the test
Do you carry a family tradition pointing to English or Irish origins? Were your ancestors Viking raiders, Roman provincials, or Neolithic builders of monumental stone circles? This compendium invites you to step into one of the longest and most dynamic population histories in Europe—from the first farmers of Neolithic Britain to the age of Roman rule and the Viking expansion across the North Atlantic.
This test unites multiple genomic reconstructions to trace the peoples who lived in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland across nearly ten millennia. It allows you to compare your DNA to the ancient communities who built Stonehenge, settled Kent, lived under Roman rule, and sailed as Vikings across the British Isles.
What tests are included in this compendium?
This compendium combines six of our British and Irish population reconstructions, each representing a key cultural and genetic phase in the history of the Isles. Together, they reveal how prehistoric farmers, Roman citizens, and Viking settlers shaped the genetic landscape of Britain and Ireland.
-
Kent’s Prehistoric Settlers (7500 BC–750 AD)
This reconstruction includes fifteen individuals from Kent who witnessed the transformation from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic, the rise of Bronze Age societies, the arrival of the Bell Beaker culture, and the transition into early medieval England following the Anglo-Saxon migrations. The test provides a detailed historical, archaeological, and paleogenetic background of these early builders of southeastern England, including their relationships with other ancient Britons and their cultic practices. -
Stonehenge Builders of Southern Britain (8760–2460 BC)
This test includes twenty-two individuals from southern Britain who lived before, during, and after the construction of Stonehenge. It explores how Neolithic and early Bronze Age societies organized labor, expressed belief systems, and interacted with neighboring populations. The reconstruction documents social change across one of the most iconic episodes in prehistoric Europe. -
Roman Britons of York (60–350 AD)
Fifteen Roman-era individuals from Driffield Terrace in York represent life in Britain at the height of Roman imperial power, spanning the Julio-Claudian and Nerva–Antonine dynasties. This test provides insight into provincial Roman society, military and civilian life, cultic practices, and interactions between Roman settlers and indigenous Britons. -
Vikings of Ireland and the Isle of Man (765–900 AD)
This reconstruction includes eight Viking individuals from six sites across Ireland and the Isle of Man. It traces their origins, haplogroup composition, settlement patterns, and interactions with local populations. The test explores how these Norse communities lived, believed, traded, and fought during the early medieval period. -
Vikings of England and Wales (940–1005 AD)
Fifteen Viking individuals from three sites in England and Wales represent Norse expansion during the later Viking Age. This test documents their genetic legacy, encounters with Anglo-Saxon societies, and cultural integration during a formative period of English history. -
Vikings and Inhabitants of Orkney, Scotland (361–1020 AD)
Fifteen individuals from Orkney capture both pre-Viking inhabitants and later Norse settlers. This test reconstructs life in the northern isles across centuries of cultural transition, exploring maritime society, ritual life, and long-distance connections across the North Atlantic world.
This compendium provides a comprehensive integration of genetic data with archaeological and historical context. You will receive haplogroup analyses, migration histories, and detailed narratives of cultural interaction across time. A full individual profile is available for every ancient person included—offering a uniquely immersive view into how the peoples of Britain and Ireland lived, believed, and shaped the foundations of the modern world.
