About the test
Few regions in Europe experienced a transformation as dramatic as the Carpathian Basin during the early Middle Ages. This compendium invites you to step into a world of mounted raiders, steppe empires, elite conquerors, and emerging Christian kingship—where the foundations of the Kingdom of Hungary were forged in blood, movement, and power. These were not distant legends, but real people whose migrations, conquests, and dynasties reshaped Central Europe and whose genetic legacy may still echo within you.
We reconstructed the DNA of 106 ancient individuals from 39 archaeological sites across Hungary, spanning more than five centuries—from 533 AD to 1080 AD. Together, they reveal the full arc of Hungary’s transformation: from steppe-based confederations to a centralized medieval kingdom under the Árpád dynasty.
What tests are included in this compendium?
This compendium unites four of our premier genomic reconstructions, each representing a decisive chapter in the rise of medieval Hungary. Together, they form a continuous genetic and historical narrative of conquest, settlement, and state formation in the heart of Europe.
-
Early Avars of Medieval Hungary (533–813 AD)
Explore the genetic legacy of the early Avars—steppe nomads who established a powerful khaganate in the Carpathian Basin. These communities introduced new military traditions, elite burial customs, and far-reaching connections stretching from Central Asia to Byzantium. -
Raiders of Carpathia (680–800 AD)
Step into an era defined by mobility and warfare. This test captures the people behind the mounted raids that terrorized and transformed neighboring regions, revealing how steppe tactics and rapid movement reshaped the political landscape of early medieval Europe. -
Conqueror Avars Elite (912–987 AD)
Discover the elite groups associated with the conquest and consolidation of power in the Carpathian Basin. These individuals represent high-status warriors and leaders whose genetic signatures reflect both steppe ancestry and local integration at a critical turning point in Hungarian history. -
Árpádian Hungary: Legacy of Blood (1025–1080 AD)
Connect with the ruling lineage that transformed conquest into kingdom. This test explores the genetic legacy of the Árpád dynasty—the founders of the medieval Hungarian state—marking the transition from pagan steppe traditions to Christian monarchy and European integration.
You will receive a comprehensive ancestral profile integrating genetic data with historical, archaeological, and paleogenetic context. Each ancient individual includes a detailed profile covering daily life, social status, burial traditions, warfare, belief systems, and political organization. This compendium allows you to trace how steppe nomads became rulers of a medieval kingdom—and how your own ancestry may intersect with that extraordinary transformation.
This is more than a medieval DNA test. It is a journey through conquest, power, and legacy—following the rise of Hungary from raiding confederations to royal bloodlines. Step into the world of the Avars and the Árpádians, and discover whether your genetic story still carries the imprint of the Kingdoms of Hungary.
Why take this test
Before 2010, reading the DNA of ancient people was a distant dream. That changed when scientists sequenced the DNA of a Neanderthal who lived over 30,000 years ago. This breakthrough unlocked the secrets of ancient genomes from people who lived between 15,000 BC and 1800 AD, spreading paleogenomic research across time and continents. Now, a new generation of DNA testing no longer relies on modern populations as stand-ins for ancient tribes. Instead, it goes right to the source, using the DNA of the ancients themselves.
Ancient DNA Hub’s Tests are the first of their kind, crafted solely from the DNA of ancient peoples through our pioneering technology. With our tests, you will receive a uniquely detailed ancient ancestry report, pinpointing specific regions and tribal connections more accurately than ever. Imagine discovering lands, tribes, and empires where your ancestors lived, fought, created, and dreamed millennia ago. By merging genetic data with the knowledge of history and archaeology, Ancient DNA Hub brings the past to life—helping you connect to your heritage on the most personal level.
