About the test
Travel back to the Early and Middle Bronze Age Near East, when the city-state of Ebla—located at Tell Mardikh in modern-day Idlib Governorate—rose as one of the most powerful Semitic kingdoms of the ancient world. Between 2600 and 1850 BC, Ebla commanded regional trade networks, governed vast territories across Syria and Canaan, and maintained diplomatic ties with Sumer, Akkad, Mari, and the wider Levant. This test reveals your genetic connection to the Canaanite-speaking peoples of Ebla, whose archives and palatial complexes transformed our understanding of Semitic civilization.
The individuals represented here come from the great palace city of Tell Mardikh, where extensive royal archives were preserved as clay tablets documenting administration, religion, diplomacy, economics, and daily life. Their genomes encapsulate the ancestral structure of Bronze Age Northwest Semitic populations—a blend of ancient Levantine, Mesopotamian-influenced, and northern inland Near Eastern ancestries that later shaped Amorite, Aramean, Canaanite, Israelite, and Phoenician populations.
Collected and reconstructed from:
- Idlib Governorate — Tell Mardikh (Ebla)
The royal center of Early Bronze Age Syria. Individuals excavated from this monumental urban settlement—home to temples, administrative quarters, and the famed royal palace—represent the Canaanite-speaking elite and commoner populations of Ebla. Their remains reflect a society deeply involved in long-distance trade (timber, textiles, metals), agrarian production, diplomatic exchanges, and early written Semitic traditions.
This test reveals:
- Your genetic affinity to Bronze Age Northwest Semitic populations
- Connections to the people who lived and governed within the Eblaite Kingdom
- How ancient Levantine ancestry blended with northern Syrian and Mesopotamian components
- The biological footprint of one of the earliest powerful Semitic states
