About the test
Long before medieval kingdoms rose in Central Europe, a powerful steppe empire ruled the heart of the continent—the Avar Khaganate. This compendium invites you to explore the people who arrived from the Eurasian steppe as mounted warriors, forged one of Europe’s most formidable early medieval empires, and dominated the Carpathian Basin and the Balkans for centuries. These were the khagans, elites, and warrior clans who reshaped Croatia, Hungary, and their neighbors—and whose genetic legacy may still live on in you.
We reconstructed the DNA of 83 ancient individuals from 27 archaeological sites across Croatia and Hungary, spanning an extraordinary period from 300 AD to 987 AD. Together, these individuals capture the full arc of Avar history—from their early expansion into the Balkans to the rise of elite conqueror groups who dominated Central Europe at the height of Avar power.
What tests are included in this compendium?
This compendium unites three of our premier Avar genomic reconstructions, each representing a distinct phase of the Avar Khaganate. Together, they provide an unparalleled genetic and historical portrait of one of Europe’s most influential steppe empires.
-
Early Avars of Medieval Croatia (300–847 AD)
Explore the genetic legacy of the Avars as they entered the Balkans and established early centers of power. These communities reveal how steppe traditions merged with local populations, shaping early medieval Croatia and the wider Adriatic hinterland. -
Early Avars of Medieval Hungary (533–813 AD)
Step into the core territory of the Avar Khaganate. This test captures the people who ruled the Carpathian Basin, controlled key trade routes, and challenged Byzantium and neighboring powers through military strength and political dominance. -
Conqueror Avars Elite of Hungary (912–987 AD)
Discover the elite warrior and ruling classes associated with the later phase of Avar dominance. These individuals represent high-status groups whose burial customs, material wealth, and genetic profiles reflect power, hierarchy, and far-reaching steppe connections.
You will receive a comprehensive ancestral profile integrating genetic data with historical, archaeological, and paleogenetic context. Each ancient individual includes a detailed profile covering daily life, social status, burial traditions, warfare, belief systems, and political organization. This compendium allows you to trace how steppe nomads established and maintained one of the most enduring early medieval empires in Europe—and how your own ancestry may intersect with that legacy.
This is more than a medieval DNA test. It is a journey into the world of khagans and horsemen, conquest and empire, movement and power. Step into the age of the Avar Khaganate and discover whether your genetic story still carries the imprint of the steppe lords who once ruled Central Europe.
Why take this test
Before 2010, reading the DNA of ancient people was a distant dream. That changed when scientists sequenced the DNA of a Neanderthal who lived over 30,000 years ago. This breakthrough unlocked the secrets of ancient genomes from people who lived between 15,000 BC and 1800 AD, spreading paleogenomic research across time and continents. Now, a new generation of DNA testing no longer relies on modern populations as stand-ins for ancient tribes. Instead, it goes right to the source, using the DNA of the ancients themselves.
Ancient DNA Hub’s Tests are the first of their kind, crafted solely from the DNA of ancient peoples through our pioneering technology. With our tests, you will receive a uniquely detailed ancient ancestry report, pinpointing specific regions and tribal connections more accurately than ever. Imagine discovering lands, tribes, and empires where your ancestors lived, fought, created, and dreamed millennia ago. By merging genetic data with the knowledge of history and archaeology, Ancient DNA Hub brings the past to life—helping you connect to your heritage on the most personal level.
