About the test
Have you ever wondered whether your ancestry reaches back to the formative centuries of medieval Germany, when tribal confederations, warrior elites, and emerging kingdoms reshaped the heart of Europe? This compendium invites you to explore the people who lived during a decisive era marked by migration, conflict, Christianization, and the foundations of later German identity. These were the centuries when regional peoples became history-makers—and their genetic legacy may still live on in you.
We reconstructed the DNA of 32 medieval individuals recovered from archaeological sites across Germany, representing communities that lived between the early 7th and 11th centuries AD. These individuals belonged to populations that played central roles in shaping medieval Europe through warfare, law, landholding, and cultural transformation.
What tests are included in this compendium?
This compendium brings together two complementary genomic reconstructions representing distinct yet interconnected medieval German populations. Together, they capture both the southern and northern traditions that defined early medieval Germany.
-
Medieval Alemannic Confederation (605 AD)
Explore the genetic legacy of the Alemanni, a powerful tribal confederation of southern Germany. Known from Roman, Merovingian, and early medieval sources, the Alemanni shaped the cultural and political landscape of the Upper Rhine region. This test provides insight into a society defined by kinship, warrior elites, and the transition from pagan traditions to early Christianity. -
Medieval Saxons of Germany (600–1100 AD)
Connect with the Saxons of northern and central Germany—one of the most influential peoples of early medieval Europe. This reconstruction spans several centuries, capturing Saxon communities before and after their incorporation into the Frankish realm. It explores genetic continuity through conquest, Christianization, and the emergence of medieval state structures.
You will receive a comprehensive ancestral profile integrating genetic data with historical and archaeological context. The compendium includes haplogroup analyses, migration patterns, and reconstructions of daily life, belief systems, social organization, and regional interaction. Each ancient individual is presented with a detailed profile, allowing you to explore how medieval warriors, farmers, and families lived—and how their genetic legacy may connect to your own.
This is more than a DNA comparison. It is an opportunity to step into the world of early medieval Germany, to stand alongside the Alemanni and Saxons as Europe was taking shape, and to discover whether your own ancestry carries echoes of the people who forged that past.
Why take this test
Before 2010, reading the DNA of ancient people was a distant dream. That changed when scientists sequenced the DNA of a Neanderthal who lived over 30,000 years ago. This breakthrough unlocked the secrets of ancient genomes from people who lived between 15,000 BC and 1800 AD, spreading paleogenomic research across time and continents. Now, a new generation of DNA testing no longer relies on modern populations as stand-ins for ancient tribes. Instead, it goes right to the source, using the DNA of the ancients themselves.
Ancient DNA Hub’s Tests are the first of their kind, crafted solely from the DNA of ancient peoples through our pioneering technology. With our tests, you will receive a uniquely detailed ancient ancestry report, pinpointing specific regions and tribal connections more accurately than ever. Imagine discovering lands, tribes, and empires where your ancestors lived, fought, created, and dreamed millennia ago. By merging genetic data with the knowledge of history and archaeology, Ancient DNA Hub brings the past to life—helping you connect to your heritage on the most personal level.
